BOLIVAR – Members of the
Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Joint Solid Waste Management District board of directors are waiting on official word from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency about a solid waste plan extension.

Wayne County Commissioner and board Chairman Cheryl Noah said at a recent meeting that the extension was discussed during a three-way telephone conversation last week with Andrew Booker, a representative of the OEPA.

“The OEPA has requested that the deadline for writing the plan be extended to March 31 instead of Dec. 31,” Noah said. “It was only verbal. We don’t have it in writing yet.

“The OEPA has not completed the draft plan. The board should give direction on what they wanted relayed to the OEPA about the plan.”

Executive Director David Held said the extension will give the Landfill Committee more time to develop and approve rules.

Noah, noting the district is operating under a plan approved in 1993, said the district could have a split year under two plans and the budget could change.

Tuscarawas County Commissioner Jim Seldenright asked when the three-year deadline was up so the district can begin writing its own plan, get it approved and take back control.

Held said that deadline will need to be verified by OEPA.
